THE STORY OF ACHILLES
Our Classic Carnaroli Rice bears the name of an important figure in the history of Carnaroli rice, Achille De Vecchi, an Italian agronomist and breeder, cousin of Ettore De
Vecchi, father of the Carnaroli variety.
Carnaroli rice is in fact born from the cross between two varieties: Vialone and Lencino by the hand of Ettore de Vecchi aided by the geneticist Emiliano Carnaroli (from whom the rice takes its name
variety). This crossing was carried out in 1939 at the Rice Experimental Station of Vercelli. However, it was Achille De Vecchi himself, after the war, who continued and
perfect the genetic selection of this variety, to the point of fixing its distinctive characteristics.
1974 is a significant date for Carnaroli rice as it is the year in which the variety was officially registered in the National Register of Rice Varieties in Italy, decreeing its official birth as a variety recognized in its own right.
